Admissions

Your child must be 2 years of age, by May 31st to be enrolled at the school. Brownstone takes applications a year in advance of the school year that you want to send your child to school. So for example, if you would like your child to attend The Brownstone School in September 2010, you should call us on the third Monday of September 2009 to request an application package. Demand for an application package may be high, so we encourage you to call on this day. We will keep the phones open all day. Please do not email us. Depending on how many siblings register for school for 2010, lotteries may take place for either the Red Room or Blue Room classes. You should still call on September 21st to give us your information.

Applications will be distributed once the information has been entered into a database and the lotteries have taken place. (Normally within 2 weeks.) Once you have returned the completed application form to us, please call us a few days later to arrange a parent tour for the fall. Tour slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, and tend to fill up quickly. Parent tours are held in the morning. The Director of Admissions will give you an overview of the program and answer any general questions that you may have. This information session will be followed by a tour of the classrooms, led by one of our current parent volunteers. Your visit will last about 40 minutes.

If after your tour, you want to proceed further, please call us to arrange a child visit for January or February. Notice of whether your child is accepted into the program is sent out at the beginning of March, following guidelines set by the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY), of which Brownstone is a longstanding member. Preference is given to siblings and legacy families. Children do not need to be toilet trained.

The Brownstone School is a licensed by the NYC Department of Health, Division of Daycare and is under the aegis of the Agency for Child Development.

Financial Aid

You will see on the application that there is a check box to apply for financial aid. If you check this box, a financial aid package will be sent to you after you submit your application. However, we would like to outline a little bit about financial aid. There are two ways and both apply to families who are applying for our extended day program only.
  1. Funding through the Agency for Children (ACD). The City of New York may subsidize the cost of sending a child to The Brownstone School, if enrolled in the extended day program, subject to openings at the school. They have a specific criteria that needs to be met that involves income and outgoings for dependents. The threshold for income is low (no more than $3975 gross monthly for a family of four.) A family must still contribute a weekly fee that is determined by this agency. To find out about qualification, call 311 and ask for the Agency for Child Development.
  2. Funding through the Brownstone Scholarship. Over the last two years the Brownstone School has raised enough money for a small scholarship fund. The mission of the scholarship fund is to enroll children who would otherwise not be able to afford the Brownstone School. The funds will be allocated to children who need extended day care because the parents are working. If you indicate on the application form that you would like to apply, the scholarship committee will send you a package. Decisions about financial aid are made by a committee and are independent of the admissions office.
If you are applying for the half day or full day program please note that financial aid will not be available.
