Sweat Equity: Volunteering at Brownstone

We rely heavily on the support of volunteers to accomplish what happens at the Brownstone School. Parents and friends in the community reach out to us and help with everything from fundraising to potluck dinners. We hope you will want to get involved. Please contact us for more information on volunteer opportunities.

Board of Trustees

The Brownstone School's Board is a group of parents of current (and former) students, as well as school staff and administration that regularly meet to determine policies, set goals and directions, and plan events for the school. The Board typically meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30PM. Childcare is provided.
Some of the items that are discussed at board meetings might include: planning school events like the Halloween Fair or Spring Auction, determining which renovation project should be a priority, or issues that have been concerning the children in the classroom. For 2007-2008, the parents on the Executive Commitee of the Board are: Gail van Brugge (Chair), Alix Botwin Krell and Irene Coeny (Co-Vice Chairs), Lori Malloy (Secretary), and Edith Baltazar (Treasurer)
All parents are welcome to attend the board meetings. The schedule of meetings can be found on the School Calendar.

Class Representative

Each class at the Brownstone School has two or three parents who serve as class representatives. The representative's role is to help serve as a liaison between the parents in their particular class and the Board of Trustees and school. Class representatives attend the board meetings on the behalf of class parents who may not be able to attend. A class representative also communicates information on potluck suppers, volunteer drives and school closings due to inclement weather etc. The phone list is divided between the reps. Email is also used frequently. You can volunteer to be a rep at the orientation on the first evening of the school year.
If you are not able to regularly attend board meetings or have questions about any aspect of the school, your classroom representative can help. Please don't hesitate to contact her or him.

Classroom Activities

Parents help to make the learning experience at the Brownstone School even richer, and are regularly invited into the classroom to contribute their time and energy. Parents often help by reading to children or supervising with field trips. However, Brownstone parents, like our children, display a great diversity. Some have taught yoga, dance, ethnic cooking and many other talents.
We encourage all parents to demonstrate their unique skills and talents.

Special Events

The Brownstone School sponsors many special events throughout the regular school year. Most events help families and our children to have fun and feel a sense of belonging.. Some events, like the Halloween Fair, Brady Rymer and Wendy Gelsanliter concerts and Spring Auction, are also fundraisers. Some events, like pot-luck dinners and Grandparents Day, are just for fun. Some events, like parents-only information seminars on Kindergarten, are educational.
All of the events are the result of lots of hard work on the part of volunteers. We encourage you to help an event happen AND help each of them become a success by participating. See the calendar for the complete listing.
